If you're a tram user, how will TIF help?

The TIF investment will bring more Metrolink trams, running more frequently to many more destinations.

The current tram network covers 37km of track. After existing committed investment (3a) and TIF funded investment is completed, the network will cover 103km. The number of passengers carried will rise to 70 million each year, from a capacity of 20 million today. The number of stops will rise to 108.

The tram network will be expanded to reach Manchester Airport, East Didsbury, and Ashton-under-Lyne, and funding is earmarked for an extension to the Trafford Centre. Extensions will also reach Oldham and Rochdale town centres with TIF.

There are currently 32 trams on the existing network. We have already ordered 40 additional trams for the existing network and the phase 3a extensions. TIF will fund a further 58 trams, giving a total of 130 trams on the expanded network.

More comfortable journeys
Extra seats will be added in peak hours.

  • All Altrincham-Bury direct services will be made up of double units rather than single units by 2010 (as part of the programme already underway).
  • All Altrincham-Bury via Piccadilly services will be made up of double units rather than single units by Christmas 2012 (under TIF).
