Extending the service to the Airport and East Didsbury
A new Metrolink extension will run south through Chorlton to Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe, and to East Didsbury.
A second cross city centre Metrolink line will provide a more resilient network for journeys through the city centre.
In all, 18.9km of new extensions will be provided to create these routes.
Naturally, many more Metrolink stops will be created too, giving many more people easy access to many more destinations. These will include:
Fast and frequent
The expanded Metrolink system will provide trams every six minutes on existing routes, and Piccadilly to Droylsden, Victoria to Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Victoria to East Didsbury.
There will be services every 12 minutes from Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, via Wythenshawe town centre and funding has been earmarked for a 12 minute service from Piccadilly to the Trafford Centre.
More spaces
Funding is already in place for all rush hour Altrincham-Bury services to run double trams by 2010. Under the TIF package, Altrincham to Bury trams that call at Piccadilly will also double by 2012, creating space for around 200 more people per trip.
